The sun rises over the golden savanna, casting a warm glow across the vast plains of Ongava Game Reserve. Here, in the heart of Namibia, life moves at a rhythm that has endured for centuries. This is rhino country, a place where survival and hope walk side by side. Once four unproductive cattle farms, Ongava is now a thriving sanctuary for countless species, with rhinos at its very core. Their presence is both a gift and a responsibility. One carried with deep dedication by everyone who calls Ongava home.

Across Africa, rhino populations have been decimated. Poaching for rhino horn remains one of the greatest threats to these magnificent animals. Criminal syndicates fuel the illegal trade, putting rhinos at risk every single day.

Inside Ongava’s Discovery Center, a map reveals the rhino’s once-vast range now reduced to a handful of pinpoints. Black and white rhinos, once abundant across the continent, now exist only in small, fragmented populations. Numbers in the thousands may sound encouraging, until one understands they represent an 83–85% decline. Sobering though it is, this story is not one of despair, but of resilience.

Ongava is one of the rare places where both white and black rhinos roam freely. While closely related, their differences are striking. White rhinos are larger, with a broad, square-shaped mouth suited to grazing on grasses, while black rhinos are slightly smaller, with a pointed upper lip designed to grasp leaves and branches from shrubs and trees. Understanding these adaptations deepens appreciation for their unique roles in the ecosystem and the distinct challenges each species faces.

Every rhino at Ongava is known and carefully monitored from birth. A dedicated rhino monitoring program tracks each individual, documenting family lines to maintain a healthy, genetically diverse population. After years of drought that had made supplemental feeding a costly necessity, the rains returned to Ongava. The plains blossomed with fresh grass and new shoots, filling the air with the scent of wet earth. For the first time in years, food is abundant and natural, a gift from the land that reminds everyone at Ongava that resilience and renewal are always possible.

Keeping these animals safe is no small task. Ongava is proud to maintain a record of zero poaching incidents to date, a remarkable achievement in a world where the threat is ever-present. The success of the reserve’s conservation efforts relies on a layered, round-the-clock protection and anti-poaching system including foot patrols, trained canine teams, aerial support, advanced monitoring technologies and so much more. A multi-faceted approach designed to deter threats.

A remarkable unit in these protection efforts are the Ongava anti-poaching K9’s. Skilled in detecting intruders, tracking human scent and responding rapidly when their handlers need them. These four-legged guardians are more than security tools, they are trusted partners whose intelligence, loyalty, and skill play a vital role in keeping the rhinos safe. Guests who meet them while out on a drive through the reserve leave inspired, witnessing firsthand how teamwork across species can help save a precious animal.

Ongava is not only a haven but also a living laboratory. With almost 20 years at Ongava, Abigail Guerier brings both scientific expertise and a deep passion for wildlife conservation. She began her journey as a researcher in 2005 and has led Ongava’s Rhino Programme since 2012. Under her guidance, the groundbreaking work conducted on the reserve, including genetics studies and research on population health, ensures that every intervention is carefully informed and every rhino has the best chance at thriving in the wild. At the heart of this, the genetic research ensures healthy bloodlines and reduces the risk of inbreeding, safeguarding the resilience of future generations.


The team also manages a notching program that contributes to both protection and research through the identification and careful monitoring of each individual. Discreet tracking technology is deployed across the reserve, allowing the team to monitor movement, behaviour, and overall well-being, while also supporting security and research programs that guide conservation decisions.

Beyond daily protection, Ongava contributes to broader scientific understanding. From feeding preference studies to climate-change population modelling, these research initiatives help predict the pressures rhinos may face in years to come. Each insight brings us closer to ensuring that rhinos not only survive, but prosper in their natural habitats.

At the heart of Ongava lies a pioneering research centre committed to understanding Namibia’s dynamic ecosystems. The Ongava Research Centre conducts long-term monitoring of key species like rhinos and elephants, facilitates collaborative projects with global scientists, and integrates ecological, behavioural, and environmental data. Its work informs conservation decisions and contributes to broader knowledge about how wildlife and landscapes respond to climate variability and human influence.

Ongava Research Centre: Leading Science in a Changing Namibia

Nestled within Ongava Game Reserve, the Ongava Research Centre (or ORC) is at the forefront of conservation and ecological research in Namibia. As part of its ongoing evolution, ORC has sharpened its focus on dryland ecology and is empowering young Namibian scientists, ensuring that its work has a lasting impact on both research and researchers in Namibia. ORC’s research now falls under three primary themes:

Greater Etosha Carnivore Programme (GECP)

Co-led by ORC’s resident wildlife ecologist, Dr. Stéphanie Périquet-Pearce, this initiative brings together leading researchers from across the globe to study the carnivores of the Greater Etosha Landscape. Generally, the programme investigates various dimensions of carnivore ecology – whether bat-eared fox or lion. The GECP is driven by a large collective of both local and international partners, from the public and private sectors, and supports numerous postgraduate students. These partners include the Etosha Ecological Institute, Namibia’s Ministry of Environment and Tourism, the University of Georgia, the University of Namibia and the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research – and more.

Climate change is a pressing issue, and ORC is taking a leading role in understanding how Namibia’s drylands store and cycle carbon. Spearheaded by ORC Executive Director, Dr. Rolf Becker, this research involves collaborations with both local and international universities – these include the Namibia University of Science and Technology and the University of Edinburgh (among others). Their efforts range from measuring carbon sequestration in indigenous tree species to studying how soil microbes contribute to the landscape’s carbon cycle and tracking long-term vegetation changes using remote cameras. This umbrella programme is also growing in its capacity to support postgraduate student development.

Conservation has implications beyond wildlife. Led by one of ORC’s resident researchers, Dr. Frowin Becker, this project explores Namibia’s constitutionally enshrined intersection between conservation and public welfare and tries to understand how the link between conservation the public good plays and could play out on privately owned farmland. With collaborators from the University of Leeds and the University of Namibia, this research takes an interdisciplinary approach, by drawing from the natural and social sciences to shed more light a lesser understood aspect of Namibia’s conservation complex.

ORC is not just about science though; it’s about developing the next generation of ecologists. With a growing cohort of almost 20 postgraduate students (pursuing either Master’s or doctoral degrees), and most of them Namibian, ORC is not just helping build Namibia’s ecological knowledge base, but has become a space of growth and opportunity for the next generation of knowledge makers.

ORC has also extended its support to the AfriCat Foundation in the Okonjima Nature Reserve, a partner member of Naturally Namibia. ORC and AfriCat’s strong collaboration includes a study on the impact of scent lures at camera trap sites, a bio-indicator project and genetic analysis of wildlife in the Okonjima Nature Resereve and cheetahs and leopards rescued from thoughout Namibia during AfriCat’s work with farmers on human wildlife conflict.

Beyond its flagship projects, ORC’s work also directly supports conservation efforts on Ongava Game Reserve, through camera-trap-based wildlife monitoring, black rhino diet studies and vegetation surveying – to name just a few.

In the glare of the sun, beneath a cloudless sky, the thirstland lies waiting. The red dust settles. A heat haze shimmers on the horizon.

What the Rain Brings to Ongava: First Showers, First Blooms

In a nation that takes its name from a desert, rain is a memory that fades by the day.

But the seasons shift, and the day will come when the memory turns into a promise.

In a landscape where the annual rainfall might swing from a meagre 90 mm one year to an abundant 600 mm the next, rain is both a wildcard and a lifeline.

Unlike the blistering coastlines to the west, or the arid southern plains, Ongava enjoys some of the most reliable rain in Namibia.

In the hush of the dry season, from May to October, even the sky seems to hold its breath.

Then, late one afternoon, comes the first subtle sign of an overture to the storm.

The air grows heavy with scent. The pressure drops. Slowly, like a council of elders, the clouds begin to assemble. The sun retreats, and shadows flex across the open bush.

The animals feel it first. A giraffe freezes in place, ears twitching toward the wind. A herd of zebras mills restlessly. The birds fall silent.

And then it happens. The first raindrops land, like the footfalls of a long-awaited guest.

A splatter of big, drumming drops, releasing the intoxicating aroma known as petrichor, the scent of rain on dry soil, the scent of life returning.

In minutes, the parched earth darkens and steams. The land slakes its thirst.

The first showers in Ongava are a celebration, a homecoming, a trigger for transformation.

Within days, sometimes within hours, the first blooms of spring make their debut.

Little bursts of colour bring the brittle veld to life: indigofera, with its tiny magenta flowers; devil’s thorn, a cheerful yellow carpet concealing spiky seeds.

The wild grasses, dormant for months, shoot up in green spears. The mopane trees, long skeletal, unfurl new leaves with the softness of silk.

The insect world, too, comes alive in a frenzy of activity. Termites emerge in gleaming columns, their papery wings catching the golden light.

Dung beetles take respite from their Herculean task and flit to the skies. Butterflies, sulphur yellow, orange, spotted black-and-white, flutter across the plains. The air hums with motion and colour.

Where insects gather, so too do the birds. Bee-eaters swoop in iridescent arcs, lilac-breasted rollers tumble in spirals, hornbills stalk the ground with renewed purpose.

It’s as if the entire reserve has attuned itself to a higher frequency, everything now urgent, intense, wide awake.

For the mammals, rain is less about spectacle, and more about survival. Puddles and pans form overnight. Suddenly, there is water everywhere.

Elephants roll in the mud, flapping their ears, trumpeting in tribute. Rhinos linger at the new pools. Impala, ever alert, graze more confidently in the thicker cover. Soon, calves will be born into this season of plenty.

Tortoises, long hidden, emerge from their burrows to drink from rain-filled hollows. Warthogs kneel in damp grass, rooting for fresh shoots. Even predators shift their patterns, moving with new stealth under cloudy skies.

As new life emerges, so do the old rhythms return. So do the ancient cycles realign. But the rain can be cruel too.

A fleeting downpour might be followed by weeks of nothing. A sudden deluge might wash away fragile nests or bury seeds too deep to grow.

In Ongava, the rain does not arrive on a calendar. It announces itself on its own terms, sometimes early, sometimes late.

But when it comes, when the clouds build and burst, when the land darkens, when the insects stir and the flowers bloom, there is a collective exhale across the reserve.

This is what the rain brings: life, change, promise. And above all, joy.

Ongava’s role in rhino conservation

Since its inception in 1993, the Black Rhino Custodianship Programme has positioned Namibia as a global leader in black rhino conservation. The custodians – dedicated individuals who care for these majestic creatures – are the unsung heroes behind this remarkable success story. Their unwavering commitment and resilience not only provide hope for the future of black rhinos but also play a crucial role in safeguarding our planet’s rich biodiversity. This programme is a powerful reminder that, even in the face of daunting challenges, we have the capacity to make a lasting, positive impact on the world around us. 

As the Black Rhino Custodianship Programme manager at the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, Birgit Kötting has witnessed the incredible transformation of Namibia’s black rhino population firsthand. This journey began in the aftermath of near extinction due to poaching in the late 20th century. Today, Namibia’s vision is to re-establish viable, healthy breeding populations of 

“Namibia lost nearly all of its black rhinos during the late ’60s and early ’70s,” Birgit explains. “At that time, only a few remained on farmland and in small pockets in the Kunene Region.” In response, the government took action, relocating the surviving rhinos to Etosha National Park, where they began to thrive. “Etosha became a sanctuary for black rhinos, and from there, we were able to reintroduce them to other parks,” she adds.

However, simply relocating rhinos to parks was not enough for long-term success. Recognising the need for a more sustainable approach, the ministry established the Black Rhino Custodianship Programme in 1993. This innovative initiative allowed private landowners to care for these magnificent creatures on their land, while the rhinos remained the property of the government. The programme has since expanded to include 30 freehold properties and 13 communal custodians, contributing to a significant increase in Namibia’s black rhino population.

One of the first custodians in the programme was Ongava Game Reserve. Meaning “rhino” in the Herero language, Ongava has become a sanctuary where these spectacular creatures can thrive in their natural habitat. “Ongava has implemented top-tier anti-poaching measures and monitoring systems, which are crucial for effective conservation,” Birgit explains. “Good monitoring is the foundation of anti-poaching. If you know what you have and where they are, you can protect them more effectively.”

Birgit adds, “Ongava is one of our greatest success stories.” Their dedication has led to significant population growth, creating the need for land expansion to accommodate the thriving rhino community. The reserve’s success has brought about a new challenge: space for its growing rhino population. As a result, Ongava is now undergoing expansion. Thankfully, its visionary owners prioritise rhino conservation, choosing to expand the reserve’s territory over pursuing profit.

The Black Rhino Custodianship Programme has relocated breeding populations of black rhinos to suitable habitats, establishing free-ranging populations. This initiative relies on landholders who are both willing and able to take on the responsibility of providing care and security for the rhinos. Custodians are tasked with monitoring the rhinos, ensuring they have access to food and water, and safeguarding them to the best of their ability.

The success of the Black Rhino Custodianship Programme is evident in its impressive growth rate. Since its inception in 1993, the programme has seen the black rhino population grow from just 11 translocated individuals to around 750 today. This remarkable increase highlights the programme’s global significance, especially in the face of escalating poaching threats. As Birgit puts it, “The custodianship programme boasts the best growth rate for black rhinos in the world.”

Reflecting on her journey, Birgit expresses the profound joy of working with these incredible animals. “They’re intelligent and surprisingly trusting,” she says, recalling moments spent with them in the field. Birgit shares many anecdotes about the unique personalities of each rhino, noting how, after spending time with them in a boma setting before translocation, she learned that rhinos can recognise you by the sound of your voice. She also observed that female rhinos tend to be more independent, while the males are often more affectionate.

In a world often filled with disheartening news, it is inspiring to witness places like Ongava Game Reserve, where dedicated individuals are creating a conservation success story that will resonate for generations. It serves as a powerful reminder that, even in the face of daunting challenges, we have the power to make a positive impact. Ongava Lodge and Anderssons at Ongava have their own viewing hides set close to the waterholes, which allow guests to observe and photograph wildlife up close without disturbing the animals. These sheltered vantage points let you capture nature’s most magnificent moments or sit in awe as you watch an elephant slurping up water with its trunk, lifting it to its mouth and messily gulping it down, or guinea fowls running about and kicking up dust silhouetted against the rising sun. The hides offer photographers the chance to get a different angle than from a guide vehicle and allow more abstract photos due to the proximity to the animals.

Always keep your camera or smartphone ready:

 Animals are unpredictable, and you might miss the shot of a lifetime while you are still scrambling to get your gear out of a bag.

 Watching the sunrise from a hide and experiencing how the bush comes alive with sound and movement is magical. Waterholes can be a hive of activity early in the morning and apart from an array of birdlife, you might spot one of the shyer animals such as a hyena coming in for a quick drink of water before it disappears back into the bush.

 Take advantage of early mornings and late afternoons when the lighting is softer. If you are not on a game drive during these times, grab a book and a coffee and spend time in a hide. Not only will you enjoy the serenity of the bush, but you will see plenty of wildlife at the waterhole.

 From the hides, try low-angle shots that highlight certain aspects of the animals against the landscape. On game drives, ask your guide to help you find creative angles.

 One of the joys of staying at Ongava is slowing down and immersing yourself in the wild. Sometimes the best photographs come from simply waiting and watching as nature unfolds before you.

Whether you bring your professional camera or shoot with your phone, Ongava and its wildlife will provide you with the opportunity to take photos and leave with visible memories of your Namibian experience. But always remember the most important photography tip: after taking photos, put your camera down and allow yourself to just be in the moment. The Ongava Journey: From Farmland to Wildlife Haven

In the early 1990s, a group of visionary families embarked on an ambitious mission: to transform unproductive cattle ranches in northern Namibia into a thriving sanctuary for wildlife. This bold initiative led to the establishment of Ongava Game Reserve in 1991, covering 30,000 hectares of rehabilitated land.

The initial focus was on the reintroduction of species that had long been absent from the area. White rhinos were among the first to be relocated to Ongava, marking a significant milestone in the reserve's conservation journey. Over time, black rhinos were also introduced, contributing to the growth of a stable and secure rhino population.

At Ongava, rhino conservation isn’t just a mission, it’s our legacy. Here are some key milestones in our journey:

 Our commitment began with the translocation of six white rhinos from South Africa. This marked the start of our ongoing efforts to restore and protect these majestic creatures.

 Five years later, we received the first two male black rhinos from Etosha National Park, with several more following in the years to come. As proud participants in Namibia’s Black Rhino Custodianship Programme, we play an important role in preserving these endangered species.

 In 1994, we welcomed a white rhino named Brutalis, who made a long journey from Denmark’s Givskud Zoo to Ongava. Brutalis had been raised in captivity, and although he never fully integrated with the wild rhinos, he lived a peaceful life here until 2000, when he died due to a territorial fight with another resident male white rhino. His legacy is a reminder of the delicate balance between wild and domesticated animals.

Today, Ongava stands as a testament to successful conservation, providing a haven for a diverse array of wildlife, including lions, elephants, leopards, and various antelope species. The reserve's commitment to research and education is exemplified by the Ongava Research Centre, which serves as a hub for groundbreaking scientific studies and ecological monitoring.

At Ongava our mantra stands strong as NATURE FIRST and this incredible landscape that we find ourselves in has a way of reminding us daily of the beauty in life’s simple pleasures and the connections that matter most. 

This year has gifted us so many special moments. From the breathtaking sight of a newborn rhino calf at sunrise to evenings spent around the fire, swapping stories under a sky full of stars, the bush has been our constant source of wonder. Every day has been a reminder of why we do what we do—and how lucky we are to share this incredible place with others.

Reborn: The Story of Ongava

In 1991, a diverse group of nature enthusiasts came together with a bold vision: to rehabilitate 4 unproductive cattle farms on the southern boundary of Etosha National Park and turn it into a thriving sanctuary for wildlife. This land, once struggling under harsh conditions, was reborn as Ongava, which means "rhino" in the Herero language, a fitting name for a reserve that would become a refuge for the threatened white and black rhinos.

Over the past three decades, Ongava has evolved into one of Africa's great conservation success stories. The reserve is now home to a rich diversity of wildlife, including lions, rhinos, elephants, black-faced impala, and more, all coexisting in their natural habitats. Ongava's commitment to conservation is mirrored in its dedication to research and education, with the Ongava Research Centre leading groundbreaking studies that inform and inspire conservation efforts globally.

But Ongava is more than just a haven for wildlife, it's a place where the dreams of its founders continue to thrive, ensuring that future generations can experience the wonders of Africa's wildlife in their natural environment. Wild Wonders: Encounters in Ongava’s wilderness

When the rains fall from December to March, the bush comes alive with a special kind of magic.

Green is the colour of the wild in bloom.

In a bountiful year, the quenching rain brings new vigour to the land, topping up the waterholes and painting the bush with wildflowers.

The shift in season ushers teeming herds in from the wings, the skies abound with birdlife, and the air is alive with renewal.

In Namibia we call this Green Season. Subject to the whims of nature, it runs more or less from December to March, the hottest time of year, but also the quietest on the international safari calendar.

This makes it an ideal time for a visit to Ongava, where the season unfurls in a series of close-up encounters that stir the senses. Beginning with the rain itself.

Hoped-for, planned-for, prayed-for, it arrives with a tentative shimmer of cloud that shields the sun in the late afternoon.

Like an army on the march, the storm clouds gather and align, darkening the sky before the first heavy drops signal the start of the salvo.

From the comfort of our expansive viewing deck, a bushveld thunderstorm is a pulse-quickening experience that reveals nature's untamed fury, in the same light as its benevolence. Rain, in the wild, is a giver of life.

One of the great joys of Green Season at Ongava is the greater likelihood of seeing the new brood make their debut.

Tail-flicking young taking their first steps in an impala nursery, or an elephant calf, shielded by its matriarch, stomping its way to a waterhole.

At the same time, the greener the grazing, the more young on the land, the greater the prospects of seeing predators on the prowl.

A game drive in Green Season at Ongava heightens the adrenaline and clears the air for that perfect shot — on camera, of course.
