Introduction:
Ongava Research Centre was officially opened in June 2006 by Ivan Knezovich, Managing Director of our primary sponsor, West Midlands Safari Park, United Kingdom. ORC was established by the Directors of Ongava Game Reserve in recognition of the fact that accurate and up-to-date information and research is crucial for the optimal management of the ecosystems that make up the reserve.
Mission Statement:
To develop Ongava Research Centre (ORC) into an internationally-recognized centre of scientific excellence. Research is focussed on studies and technology that lead to an increased understanding of the ecosystems that make up Ongava Game Reserve, together with comparative analyses with the flora and fauna in other Namibian conservancies and reserves.
We have established a set of core projects, focussed on rhinos, lions and the general issues of carrying capacity. ORC is now seeking to encourage collaborative research with both international and local organizations, with a view to providing an infrastructure that will allow programmes to develop that ultimately become self-sustaining, both in scientific and financial terms.
